If having eight cores at your disposal doesn’t get you excited then I’d urge you to consider the possibilities. Games like Supreme Commander support multi processor cores and of course the intended professional market place of the XEON is riddled with SMP-enabled applications such as Adobe Photoshop, Premiere, 3DStudio, AutoCAD and even office. Windows XP and Vista both have native support for this technology so it’s only logical to conclude that the number of multi-processor cores will continue to grow.

We know that AMD will be releasing its “Barcelona” CPU that will be billed as a “4x4” platform and possibly out before Intel’s counter-solution for desktop it’s important to note that users can go out right now and buy 8-core, Intel-based Solutions; however – as of press time, the only OEM offering them is Apple. Word from Intel has it that other OEMs are looking to offer them soon and they’ll also be available from retailers soon as well. From what we can tell so far, expect to see prices around the $1500 dollar mark per CPU - not for everyone, but a value for high-end Workstation and Server users.

From an aesthetic standpoint, the XEON X5365 looks nearly identical to the Core2Duo line with the exception of more chips on the bottom side of the CPU. The X5365’s four cores run at a 1333MHz bus speed and are clocked at 3GHz – easily the fastest Intel CPU currently available.
