NVIDIA’s 5-series chipsets created quite a buzz last year, however, was limited (mostly) to the AMD platform – the rules changed, however with the 6-series which were initially quite expensive. Not too many weeks ago, it released the 680-series chipsets for the Intel Core2Duo and has since garnered a lot of fanfare; and for good reason.

The 680LT chipset provides 2 lanes of x16 PCI-Express slots, supports 1333MHz bus speed, 6 SATA ports, 8 USB 2.0, Firewire and supports “SLI” Memory up to 800Mhz. This solution is aimed at gamers and high-end PC users who need excellent performance while still staying on a reasonable budget. At an MSRP of $199 – the 680i LT is the best chipset we’ve found for the money – Intel chipsets still can’t offer SLI and don’t have any features that would be considered any better than what NVIDIA offers.

XFX is squarely inside the NVIDIA camp and has been doing an incredible job of releasing best-of-class graphic cards based on NVIDIA GPUs for quite a while now. Not too long ago, XFX decided to try its hand at doing motherboards as well and its 680i LT SLI is one of the latest from them. Unabashedly a reference design, XFX packages this board for retail and includes all the typical stuff we’ve come to expect from mainstream motherboard makers.
