Sort of like the CIA and its "black helicopters", a developer/content relations team of today's hardware makers do a lot of behind-the-scenes work with today's leading game developers. It's their largely-unnoticed efforts by the public at large and even many of us in the industry that this interview hopes to bring to light. We recently had the chance to interview NVIDIA's Roy Taylor, VP of Content Relations, in an effort to show you more details of the team behind the gaming scenes who work closely with developers to make sure we have the best games possible.

BD: Tell us a bit about what your team does specifically.

Roy: My team works closely with software developers who are involved in NVIDIA’s The Way It’s Meant To Be Played program. Through this initiative, we work with developers to help them ensure that their titles make the best possible use of the latest graphics technology and give users a great experience on NVIDIA hardware.

Let me elaborate on this, because it’s bigger than most people realize. The Way Its Meant To Be Played is a multi-million dollar program with over 100 people involved worldwide. We have a large team of engineers who work closely with developers to make their games look great and run as fast as they can. In addition we have the largest suite of content creation and de-bugging tools, which we distribute and support for free. We also have a complete Games Test Lab for testing games across 250 PC configurations. This program is a major investment to increase the overall quality of PC games.

BD: Many gamers are familiar with the “Way it’s meant to be played” moniker – what should seeing that logo on a game mean to them?

RT: When you see The Way Its Meant To Be Played on a game it means that there are features in that game that have been specifically put in to reward your investment in a GeForce 6-, 7-, or 8-series graphics card.

It means when you take off the shrink wrap and put the disc in your computer, it just works. It works because behind the scenes our engineers have spent hundreds of hours tuning it for performance and stability. And the game has been tested with our latest drivers to work great on modern GeForce cards.

TWIMTBP started as a badge for compatibility, today it’s a badge of excellence for PC gaming.
