2007 was filled with quite a bit of technology highlights for sure, but we also found several disappointing industry low points which are worth mention. While its always easy to focus on the positive by awarding the best of (that’s another article), the negative ones need pointed out sooner than later to help folks avoid them. So without further ado, here’s our top-10 list for the “Worst of 2007”:

10. Apple iPhone:
Apple is really good at certain things – their Operating Systems are typically snazzy and rather well received, for the most part, and of course the iPod has entered legendary status (even though it’s made for Apple by Foxconn).

The iPhone was an ambitious endeavor by any definition with lofty goals that the company and – unfortunately – the industry seemed to hype up as if it’s better than sliced bread.

Yeah, we know you can surf the web, play mp3’s, do your PDA chores and use it as a cell phone but there are a few glaring issues with it that put it on this list.

One cellular provider? Really? Wow! Who was the “genius” at Apple who got hog-tied by AT&T for that one? Having only one carrier in this day and age – especially from a company who doesn’t have a reputation as a cell phone maker – is stupid.

Stack on top of this the battery issues so many folks were running into and you have a recipe for a less-than-stellar device.

Apple was acting as if the iPhone was going to be the next revolutionary device. Some "mouth-breathers" even lined up on release day early – standing in long lines – chance to give their money to Apple for the device.  Again, REALLY? People are camping out for a chance to spend money on something.  I prefer to be courted for my dollar, rather than line-up or camp-out to give it away. I bet now they wish they had those hours of their life back.  Imagine all the D&D they could have played, or, with apologies to Brad Paisley, the three-way (Chats) with 2 women at one time (online). I bet now they wish they had those hours of their life back.

9. HD-DVD & Blu-Ray War:
For the love of all that’s pure and holy, can the perpetrators of these formats leave us consumers with one shred of dignity? I mean, Good Lord, the war between them are frustrating to the point where I really don’t give a damn about either one.

We get it, they both play 1080p HD content and yes, we get it; both Sony and Toshiba want to win your home over for their media. What we don’t get is how Sony keeps the price up on its players while Toshiba has HD DVD players as low as $100 bones.

What we don’t get is why these two competing formats can’t get together, shake hands and come out with ONE format. It’s almost enough to make one want to use their PC as a home entertainment device for HD content and circumvent both formats completely.
